Garden Store Manager
Department:
Retail
Reports to:
Managing Director
Purpose of Position:
Manage an effective and efficient store to maximize revenue and customer experience
Position Scope:
Manage and direct the developmental, financial, merchandising, administrative & personnel functions of the store
Hours:
40 hours a week, Tuesday through Saturday; some Sundays & evenings in response to Garden business activity.
Compensation:
Salaried position -$38,000 to $40,000. Comprehensive health, dental, retirement benefits. Paid vacation
Essential Functions:
Strategic Planning & Fiscal Management
- With the assistance of a consultant develop a vision & long term plan for the profitable growth & development of the retail division
- Prepare, analyze and manage the annual operating budgets, financial reports, inventory, revenue & expense projections
Staff Management
- Hire, train & supervise store team members
- Set and monitor sales goals
- Manage performance
- Work the sales floor as needed
Buying & Merchandising
- Oversee purchase of all merchandise for resale within the annual purchasing plan & established net profit margin
- Establish appropriate markup & regulate pricing structures
- Maintain inventory control system
- Conduct annual physical inventory
- Develop merchandise mix strategies that promote current retail trends
- Research market for new sources of inventory appropriate to Garden mission
- Refine merchandising themes & implement into attractive displays
Administrative
- Refine operating policies & procedures
- Ensure compliance with policies for sales, reports, handling of merchandise, cash handling, customer service, store opening and closing
Technology
- As part of a team select and implement Point of Sale system
- Utilize technology to manage inventory, identify strong/poor sellers, create budgets, revenue projections etc
Team Member
- Partner with Marketing & Communication department to promote & advertise the store
- Partner with Events & Program department to identify store opportunities
- Partner with Visitor Service Manager to create a staffing schedule for store and ticketing
- Partner with the Business Manager & Administrative Assistant to meet fiscal timelines & accuracy
- Perform Manager on Duty functions for the Garden and Garden Store
Required Knowledge/Skills
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate people
- Proven experience working successfully with a peer team
- Strong computer skills
Required Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree preferred
- 2 years as a manager of a museum, botanical or similar store
- 5 years working in a management role
- Knowledge of Chinese/Asian culture advantageous

Volunteering
We are always looking for Greeters, Tour Guides, and Special Event Volunteers to help us throughout the year. Training is provided for all volunteers.
Volunteer benefits include free admission to the Garden on the day of your volunteer shift, discounts in the Gift Store, and invitations to work at or attend evening events in the Garden.
