Executive Director
Cynthia Johnson Haruyama

Cynthia Johnson Haruyama has been Executive Director of the Lan Su Chinese Garden since June 2008. Her prior work experience includes financial turnaround management for the nonprofit Hoyt Arboretum Friends Foundation (2001-2008) and the garden equipment manufacturer A.M. Andrews Co. (1994-2000). She is also an attorney, having specialized in corporate law and business transactions with the Portland office of Davis Wright Tremaine (1989-1994).

Ms. Haruyama’s educational background includes a law degree from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in East Asian Studies from Princeton University. Her senior thesis at Princeton which earned her academic honors was on the subject of the relevance of Confucian philosophy in modern Chinese history and focused on life and teachings of Liang Shu Ming.

She is a native of Portland, Oregon but has also lived in Japan, New Jersey and New York.
