Painted Boat in Misty Rain

The houseboat is called, "Painted Boat in Misty Rain." It symbolizes the moods of pleasure and ease. Surrounded by willows, rockeries, and a large body of water, the inside of the boat allows freedom and remoteness from the city. The garden designer also said that it represents the boat of friendship, which set out from Suzhou and docked in Portland. As you walk through the houseboat notice the intricate carvings in Ginkgo wood. The Chinese characters represent "Double Happiness." You will also notice several more bats. On a real houseboat, the second floor would be where the captain steers the boat. Our second floor is purely decorative.

On your way, you will pass the rockeries and waterfall.

Rockeries are very important in Suzhou style gardens. The Lake Tai rocks are configured to appear as mountains and clouds from a distance.

The cascading water simulates nature and the sound masks the noise of the city. The large inscription reads, "A Thousand Ravines Engulfed in Thick Clouds."
