About the Tour – Experience it All!

Discover the many cultural wonders of ancient China with the Portland Classical Chinese Garden’s 2007 China Tour. Visit the famed Forbidden City, the Qin Terra-cotta Warriors, Hua Shan Mountain, Wolong Panda Natural Preserve, scenic Guilin, the Shanghai Museum and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites like the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Master of Nets Gardens in Suzhou. This tour was expertly crafted to introduce visitors to the many cultural relics and modern wonders of China, exploring both China’s must-see tourist attractions and the less crowded scenic sites. Travel through Beijing, Xi’an, Wolong, Chengdu, Guilin, Shanghai and Suzhou to discover for yourself the majesties of China.

This tour is led by Garden guides, Dr. Charles Wu and Diane Ma, both Chinese natives fluent in English and Mandarin. Charles is Professor Emeritus of Reed College where he taught Humanities. He also serves as the Portland Classical Chinese Garden’s cultural advisor to the Board of Directors. Diane has planned and led numerous tours to China, which have resulted in a yearning for more. Their tours are full of cultural, philosophical and historical gems embellished by their personal stories. Charles and Diane are a dynamic pair, easily able to impart a bi-cultural perspective to fellow travelers.

Itinerary – September 4 – 22, 2007

Day 1 (September 4) – Flight to Beijing, cross International Date Line. 

Day 2 (September 5) - Arrive in Beijing. D

Day 3 (September 6) – Beijing. Visit Summer Palace, Forbidden City and Tianamen Square.  Enjoy a Peking Duck Dinner. B,L,D

Day 4 (September 7) - Beijing. Great Wall at Mutianyu.  Evening Peking Opera Show. B,L,D

Day 5 (September 8) – Beijing to Xi’an. Morning flight from Beijing to Xi’an; ancient capital.  Visit Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Shaanxi Provincial Museum.  B,L,D

Day 6 (September 9) – Xi’an. Visit Hua Shan, one of China’s five sacred mountains.  Enjoy an imperial-style dinner with Tang-dynasty music and dance. B,L,D

Day 7 (September 10) – Xi’an to Chengdu.  Morning flight to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province.  Visit Qingyang Temple, an ancient Taoist temple; Du Fu Cottage, where one of China’s greatest poets Du Fu (712 - 770) once lived; Wuhou Shrine, a memorial hall for the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang (181 - 234); Jingli, a cultural street.  Evening show of local performing arts provided. Day 8 (September 11) – Chengdu.  Visit the giant Buddha statue at Leshan, a city South of Chengdu and the ancient town of Huanglongxi.  Sichuan cuisine dinner. B,L,D

Day 9 (September 12) – Chengdu to Wolong. In morning, visit the Jinsha Archeological Museum featuring late Shang and early Zhou cultural relics of over 3000 years ago.  Bus to Wolong. B,L,D

Day 10 (September 13) – Wolong to Chengdu. A day with pandas at Wolong Panda Natural Preserve; afternoon bus back to Chengdu. B,L,D

Day 11 (September 14) – Chengdu to Guilin. Morning flight to Guilin.  Visit Elephant Trunk Mountain and Fubo Mountain. B,L,D

Day 12 (September 15) – Guilin. Li River Cruise through picturesque landscape; stroll along Foreigners’ Street at Yangshuo. B,L,D

Day 13 (September 16) – Guilin to Shanghai. Morning tour of Reed Flute Cave; afternoon flight to Shanghai. B,L,D

Day 14 (September 17) – Shanghai. Visit Oriental Pearl Tower; Shanghai History Museum; Shanghai Museum; Jade Buddha Temple.  Evening cruise on the Huangpu River. B,L,D

Day 15 (September 18) – Shanghai to Suzhou. Coach to Suzhou.  Visit Humble Administrator’s Garden; Suzhou Museum, Suzhou Embroidery Institute and Surging Wave Pavilion Garden. B,L,D

Day 16 (September 19) – Suzhou.  Visit Mudu, the ancient water town that Emperor Qianlong (1736 - 1795) patronized six times.  B,L,D

Day 17 (September 20) - Suzhou to Shanghai.  Visit Tiger Hill; Lion’s Grove Garden; Hanshan Temple and the Master of Nets Garden.  Coach to Shanghai.  Evening acrobatic show in Shanghai. B,L,D

Day 18 (September 21) - Shanghai.  Free day. B,D

Day 19 (September 22) - Shanghai to US. B

Tour package includes international and domestic airfare, visa fees, admission to gardens and museums, local guides, lodging (four star and above), meals (unless otherwise noted) and tips for guides, drivers, etc.  Exclusive of excess baggage costs, hotel incidentals and personal room charges.  This tour includes a $500 tax deductible donation to the Garden.
