The Portland Classical Chinese Garden

Between NW 2nd and 3rd and NW Everett and Flanders in Old Town/Chinatown, Portland Oregon, USA

Chinese New Year Celebrations February 7th to 10th!

In keeping with over 4,000 years of Chinese tradition, the Portland Classical Chinese Garden welcomes the Year of the Rat with an exuberant and colorful celebration from February 7th to 10th, 2008. From Thursday the 7th to Sunday the 10th, the first 100 visitors daily will receive hong bao (lucky red envelopes), a traditional New Year’s gift.

For the New Year, the Garden will showcase a Plant Sale in addition to a number of activities for the whole family. Events will include: lion dances, coloring the Chinese Zodiac, storytelling, and an art exhibit. The Garden’s 4th Annual Chinese New Year Plant Sale, its largest plant sale and horticultural fundraiser of the year, will delight the senses with fragrant orchids, citrus, witch hazel, quince, Chinese paper-bush and more. In addition to the events inside the Garden, a Narcissus Bulb Carving Class will be offered in the Garden’s program space on January 17th and 22nd, so that student’s bulbs may be blooming by the inception of the New Year.

On Sunday, February 10th, Chinese New Year festivities will culminate with a free lantern-making workshop and Processional. The workshop is from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the CCBA Hall at 315 NW Davis Street. From 4:00 to 5:00 pm that evening, the Garden will offer free admission for children and parents with their newly-made lanterns.
