Artists

Y La Bamba

July 10

Y La Bamba mesmerizes with a Mexi-folk magic that’s lyrical, rhythmic and bittersweet. Informed by bandleader Luz Elena Mendoza’s traditional Mexican upbringing, the band deftly blends old-world Latin music with an indie-pop aesthetic that’s won rave reviews from NPR and other critics. Their recent CD release, Court the Storm, is rich with lush vocal harmonies and compelling musical arrangements featuring Mendoza’s voice floating over brilliant chamber pop.

July 17

Back by popular demand! If youˇ¦ve ever seen Curtis Salgado, you know how the legendary soul and blues artist electrifies an audience. This is your chance to see him live in a rare setting with world-class slide guitarist Alan Hagar, performing earthy, early blues. Sparse and personal.

Mousai Remix

July 24

In ancient Greece, artists relied on Mousai—the goddesses of music, song and dance and poetry - to fire their inspiration. Featuring four young female artists, all members of the Oregon Symphony, Mousai Remix is busily inspiring modern audiences with their dynamic renditions of Beethoven and Brahms presented in non-traditional settings. Mousai Remix features Shin-young Kwon (violin), Emily Cole (violin), Jennifer Arnold (viola) and Marilyn de Oliviera (cello).

Stephane Wrembel

July 31

Called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone, Stephane Wrembel was recruited by Woody Allen to score the theme for last yearˇ¦s smash film Midnight in Paris, and he performed his catchy original song “Bistro Fada” live during the 2012 Academy Awards. To say that French-born guitarist/composer Stephane Wrembel—who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside—has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. Catch a star while you can.

Torch & Twang

August 7

If you like Billie Holiday and Patsy Cline, Henry Mancini and Hank Williams, youˇ¦re ready to Torch & Twang. Led by singer Mia Nicholson, the bandˇ¦s unique groove thrives on the intertwined roots of jazz, early country, honky tonk, bluegrass and pop. Torch & Twang features a stellar band of Portlandˇ¦s premiere cross-genre artists, including Paul Brainard on pedal steel, dobro and trumpet, Steve Christofferson on piano and harmony vocals, bassist Dave Captein and drummer Tim Paxton.
